![]() The image example below illustrates repetition. In the same way, repetition of colors, shapes, textures, or similar objects helps to tie a web page design together so that it feels like a cohesive unit. Any time you bring a set of like items together, they form a group. In accordance with the rules of proximity, this heading appears to belong to that block of text.Ī gaggle of geese, a school of fish, a pride of lions. In the second column, the “Gnomenclature” heading is placed closer to the paragraph that follows it. The result is that it looks more like a separator than a heading for the next paragraph. In the column on the left, the word “Unkgnome” is equidistant from the top and bottom paragraphs. The only difference is in the placement of the headings. If you look at the two columns of text presented below you’ll notice that they look similar. By altering these values, I can cause more or less space to appear between elements, thereby creating groups. For instance, when I define the CSS style rules for sites, I usually change the default margin that exists between common HTML elements such as headings ( h1, h2, h3 …), paragraphs, blockquotes, and even images. We practice the concept of proximity on the Web when we start setting margins and padding for elements. While composed of a seemingly random assortment of strokes, the five strokes that are the closest to each other appear to form a unified object. Take a look at the digital painting just below. Placing objects close together within a layout creates a focal point towards which the eye will gravitate. In the future, each principle will be explored further with its own blog post.Proximity is an obvious, but often overlooked, way to make a group of objects feel like a single unit. The image below does a great job of that using line and tone. The goal of creating movement is to lead the viewer’s eye all around the photo and land on the focal point. Movement is one of the simpler principles to learn I actually used it a lot when discussing the Elements of Art. By differing the kinds of shells, I’ve created variety that still maintains unity in that they are all shells. The image on the right has variety in each of the shells. Variety is exactly what it sounds like, having variety in your elements! The image on the left has variety by combining a sunset sky, the bridge, and the middle ground of the trees. The rocks in the lower part of the frame appear huge, giving them more importance. This next image gives importance by lens distortion and placement. The above image was done through composition. In this image, the size of the sky was dramatically greater than the ground, giving it importance. Finding an image that uses this purposefully was difficult. Proportion is using the size of an object to give it more or less importance. You can create contrast in an image by using complementary colors or differences in light and dark. It is similar to adding contrast to an image overall, but this is done by using the elements. This image could be separated in to each part as its own piece, but together they become a unified composition.Ĭontrast is easy. Unity is taking the parts of a piece of art and unifying them in to something better as a whole. This will cause the viewer’s eye to move around to each element. Pattern or rhythm is simply repeating an element in such a manner. This is one of the most difficult principles to grasp. ![]() The white water is also simple and creates a “harmony”. ![]() ![]() The orange and yellow leaves are all around the frame, bringing it together in a simple way. I chose this image to represent a good harmony. This happens in art by using similar elements through out a piece that bring it together in a “pleasing” way. The dictionary definition of harmony is “a consistent, orderly, or pleasing arrangement of parts congruity”. Below are an example of both poor and good balance. Balance can also be achieved by asymmetry or radial arrangement. Balanceīalance is arranging the elements in a piece so that there is an equality from one side to the other. While these apply to any media in art, I will be using them specifically for photography. The principles of design take the Elements of Art and organize them in a single piece of art.
